Yes! The self-care industry is not only classist, it encourages self-harming and self-sabotaging behaviors. The self-care culture, connected to positivity culture, is often ableist as well, demanding that people take on new stress for an artificial “self-care” exercise or lifestyle change. And on an individual level, self-care can be an additional stressor if one feels like they need to set aside bubble bath time to be well. No! Do what you need to do. I’ve started setting aside reflection time because that’s what I need more than baths. Still, I feel the pressure to treat myself, which my wallet hates…thanks for this piece, I’ve bookmarked it for those kind of days!
