Thanks for responding. As an anthropologist, I believe that our orientation is primarily genetic, although our upbringing can certainly influence it. I think it’s more likely that our highly heteronormative culture — which is also a bit puritanical despite our sexualized media — encourages us to see sexuality as something secondary to romance. Yet demisexuals are left out of the equation: we are deviant because sexual attraction is assumed to be a base impulse rather than an effect of emotional attraction.
In short, it’s complicated!
