Thank you for this. As a science communicator, I’m endlessly baffled and frustrated by academics who scoff at the idea of communicating their work to the public. As you say, they cite their huge workload and the march toward tenure. I’ve had one not-so-kind professor tell me that being published in “fluff” or “lowest common denominator” outlets simply didn’t matter in the long run. In an era when many people have anti-science views or view academics as elitists, that’s hardly a helpful attitude. I hope that many academics take your letter to heart.
