Medium Tips from a Professional Editor

You’re churning out content on Medium. You finish your draft and take a deep breath as you click that “Ready to Publish” button. Then, you check your stats every five minutes and anxiously wait for a curation or publication acceptance to come in. Days pass. Nothing happens with your piece. You feel so frustrated that you consider giving up on writing. You’re convinced that you’re terrible and it’s all pointless and Medium is not for you.

Sound familiar?

I am very active in several social media groups devoted to freelance writing and Medium, and I hear the same questions again and again. “How can I improve my writing?” “Why didn’t this publication accept my piece?” “Why wasn’t I curated?” (Heck, I’ve asked that myself. But that’s another topic.)

I don’t have easy answers to these questions. Even the best writers are rejected from publications, and everyone has room to improve. You’re never done growing as a writer.

However, a primary reason that your work isn’t being accepted, curated, or appreciated is rather simple. I read a lot of pieces on Medium, and as a professional writer and editor, I think I know what the problem is.
