I think it’s worth noting that cinemas still bring people in, and many movie buffs happily do both cinema dates and Netflix-and-chills. According to a study cited in this WaPo article, “57 percent of respondents who watched at least 15 hours of streaming each week also went to the movie theater at least six times every year.” And even if the content isn’t original, even if it’s part of a franchise, even if it’s rebooted, people don’t care. Really, we’ve been telling the same few stories for millennia, says Joseph Campbell. I agree with Steven Spielberg: a token couple weeks in the cinema doesn’t make it a cinematic release. However, I do think Netflix films should be included among the Academy Award nominees. Award shows are absurd and need to be re-envisioned, but please, let me have both my movie theatre and my smart TV.
