I have a strong love/hate relationship with this movie, but it was interesting to hear your political take on it. As I’ve gotten older, the sheer creepiness of some of the relationships really stand out to me. In fact, the only one that I can get behind is the one that develops between the stand-ins. They may be repressed, but at least it’s genuine and doesn’t involve any sort of power imbalance! Both are equally naked and embarrassed. Otherwise, the prime minister with the caterer, boss with the secretary, writer with the maid, rock star with the manager, tourist with a bunch of drunk girls, whatever the hell is going on with Andrew Lincoln, and even the obsessive kid are all the least desirable relationships anyone should want. I suppose the film might be trying to say that love is sloppy and fickle blah blah blah…but damn if it doesn’t heavily romanticize all these shitty relationships!
