I blame romantic movies for this idea that you’re simply going to bump into the love of your life at a coffee shop. Even beyond the power dynamic sought in catcalling, it does seem that many people, especially men, think that women should respond to their advances and “give him a chance” (and yes, even “guys’ comedies” include some of these romcom ideas). I also like that you draw a line from catcalling to being an open person, especially in retail. That’s a useful comparison, and really highlights how inappropriate it is to hit on someone who’s working, when they can’t really turn you away or refuse you!
