Box office attendance actually rebounded after a dip a few years ago.

The Matrix?! That was many years ago. Big hits such as Shape of Water ($195.2 million, Academy Award winner) and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ($123.2 million so far, biggest hit ever for Tarantino) are based on original screenplays, and those are just a couple off the top of my head.
